Organising recreational voyages for a fee

Organising recreational voyages for a fee is subject to certain requirements.

According to the Maritime Safety Act, a recreational craft used for recreational voyages for a fee can be driven by a person at least 18 years old with a recreational craft driver's certificate.

According to the Maritime Safety Act, such a recreational craft must have undergone a technical survey which is carried out every three years if the recreational craft is less than ten years old and every two years if the recreational craft is ten or more years old according to subsection 7 of § 36 of the Maritime Safety Act.

The technical survey covers the following:

  • the state of the hull structure, material and surface;
  • hull penetrations, valves, windows, hatches;
  • steering and electrical system;
  • engine condition, fuel system, leaks, fastenings;
  • internal equipment, radio licence;
  • mandatory equipment.

The applicant must also be aware of and prepared for the fact that the skipper of a recreational craft organising recreational voyages for a fee is required to introduce the placement and use of lifesaving and safety equipment to persons on board and to explain to them any applicable environmental protection and safety requirements.

A state fee is charged for the technical survey to be determined during the survey.
